believes in the healing power of play – providing smiles and laughter to children at a time when they need it most. One in four children are admitted to a hospital before reaching age 14. Though some patients are short-stay, many have a recurring need for care and return repeatedly to hospital. Some who are terminally ill spend much of their short lives in hospital. Radio Lollipop gives young patients a voice and a choice during their stay. While they can´t say “no” to taking their medicine or receiving treatment, they can request their favorite songs, win prizes and hear their own voices on the radio. Those activities give youngsters a haven of normality in the hospital day which in other respects is strange, different and often scary
Radio Lollipop at Miami Children’s Hospital is driven by a team of enthusiastic volunteers who provide care, comfort, play and entertainment to our patients and their families using our fully equipped unique in-house radio station, as well as fundraising for the organization. Play is essential to a child’s development. Radio Lollipop’s team of over 60 volunteers involve the patients in recreational activities linked to radio programs that are child-focused, and filled with mentally stimulating fun and games. Volunteers will encourage the patients to assist in the live studio program, presenting the show, announcing the winners, and signing on the air.
Radio Lollipop volunteers visit more than 11,000 patients annually giving each patient and their siblings live entertainment, interactive play activities, and arts and crafts. Radio Lollipop volunteers provide prizes for over 9,000 sick children; almost every child is a winner at Miami Children’s Hospital.
